Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development

The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED), which was established in December 1961, is the first institution in the Middle East that took an active role in the international development efforts. The Fund extends loans on concessional terms to finance development projects in the developing countries. KFAED also assists countries by providing technical assistance in terms of financing the cost of feasibility studies of projects, and capacity building of government and non-government officials in various areas. The Fund’s operations are focused primarily on agriculture and irrigation, transport and communications, energy, industry, and water and sewage sector. 
Maldives has been receiving assistance from the State of Kuwait since the late 1970s. The State of Kuwait has provided assistance to the Maldives through the KFAED in the form of loans and technical assistance grants. The first loan by KFAED to Maldives was in 1976, for the Airport Project and has since then provided assistance in various projects .
