Japan Bank of International Cooperation (JBIC) was established on October 1, 1999 through the merger of Japan Export-Import Bank and Overseas Economic Cooperation Fund, and in 2008 it became the international wing of Japan Finance Corporation (JFC). It later became independent from JFC and is now a wholly owned public financial institution of the Japanese Government, reestablished on April 1, 2012. JBIC has the objective of contributing to the sound development of Japan and the international economy.

JBIC has aided Maldives for the Tsunami Reconstruction Project in 2006.
