A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Ministry of Finance and Planning and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) for the development of a new airport and associated land reclamation in Aa. Mathiveri.

The MoU was signed at a ceremony held on 19 August 2025, presided over by His Excellency President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. State Minister Hussain Imran Abdul Muhaimin signed the MoU on behalf of the Ministry of Finance and Planning, while MACL’s Managing Director and CEO, Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, signed on behalf of the company.

This project forms part of the government’s commitment to strengthen regional connectivity and advance national development across all atolls of the Maldives.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu emphasised that the airport to be developed in Mathiveri would create significant opportunities for the tourism industry and bring broader benefits to the local community. During his visit to Mathiveri, as part of his ongoing tour of Alif Alif Atoll, the President also announced that in addition to the airport, 26.5 hectares of land will be reclaimed to support community needs, development projects, and other public initiatives.

The President described the project as commercially viable and fully feasible, further assuring that the airport, along with the reclamation and necessary facilities, would be completed and become operational within two and a half years.
