The Minister of Finance and Planning, Moosa Zameer, today inaugurated the commencement of land reclamation works to support the development of HA. Dhidhdhoo Airport, housing projects, and other essential services, marking a significant step in strengthening infrastructure and connectivity in the northern Maldives.

Speaking at the ceremony held in Dhidhdhoo, the Minister said the project was focused on practical outcomes that directly improve daily life for residents. He noted that land reclamation is not only about creating additional land, but about enabling better access, stronger public services, and planned growth that benefits both Dhidhdhoo and neighbouring islands.

Highlighting the importance of the airport development, the Minister said improved air connectivity would enhance access to medical services, support travel for students and workers, strengthen local trade, and encourage investment in the region. He also underscored the importance of planned housing development to ensure safe homes, improved utilities, and orderly, liveable communities.

The Minister emphasised that essential services such as power, water, sewerage, waste management, roads, and public spaces are critical to public health, climate resilience, and overall quality of life. He outlined the government’s approach to delivering such projects through clear prioritisation, responsible financing, and a strong focus on implementation and accountability.

“As a government, we are committed to spending public funds with care and ensuring that projects deliver real results for communities,” the Minister said, adding that close coordination would be maintained with Maldives Airports Company Limited, the Dhidhdhoo Island Council, and relevant institutions to ensure timely and effective execution.

The ceremony was attended by the Member of Parliament for the Dhidhdhoo Constituency, representatives of MACL, the Dhidhdhoo Island Council, community members, and residents of the island.

Concluding his remarks, the Minister said the project forms part of a wider national effort to strengthen island communities, reduce disparities in access to services, and support sustainable development while maintaining fiscal discipline. He expressed confidence that the initiative would help Dhidhdhoo grow as a key regional hub in the north, creating opportunities, supporting livelihoods, and improving living standards for families in the area.
