Minister of Finance and Planning, Moosa Zameer, today led the Government of Maldives’ expression of gratitude to the People’s Republic of China for the emergency assistance extended following the recent fire incident that disrupted operations across several government ministries.
Speaking at the official handover ceremony, Minister Zameer underscored the importance of the support provided by the Chinese Government, noting that the assistance—valued at USD 2.8 million—will play a key role in restoring essential government functions. The emergency package includes urgently needed office equipment and furniture to replace resources lost in the incident.
Minister Zameer emphasised that China’s swift response reflects not only practical support but also the depth of the bilateral relationship. He highlighted the longstanding cooperation between the Maldives and China, with collaboration spanning infrastructure, development financing, and capacity building. He further noted that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s recent visits to China, including meetings with President Xi Jinping, have strengthened trust and broadened the scope of partnership.
“The Maldives and China share a strong and enduring friendship. Today’s assistance is a clear sign of true partnership, and it will significantly ease the challenges faced by the affected ministries. We are sincerely grateful for this timely and generous support,” Minister Zameer stated.
During the ceremony, Minister Zameer signed the Handover Certificate alongside the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to the Maldives, Kong Xianhua, formally marking the transfer of assistance to the Government of Maldives. He affirmed the Maldives’ commitment to further expanding cooperation with China for the mutual benefit of both countries.
