Minister Ameer attended the 4th Annual Meeting of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) held in Luxembourg

The 4th Annual Meeting of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) was held in Luxembourg from 12th -13th July 2019. Minister of Finance, Mr. Ibrahim Ameer headed the delegation as the Governor from Maldives to AIIB. Alternate Governor to AIIB, Minister of National Planning and Infrastructure, Mr. Mohamed Aslam also attended the Annual Meeting. 

The theme of this year’s meeting was ‘Cooperation and Connectivity’. The Meeting was attended by Governors, delegations from prospective members, partner institutions, civil society organizations, the private sector, media, and leading experts across a range of fields from all AIIB member countries and included a Governors’ Business Roundtable, during which Governors offered insights on the Bank’s development and priorities, as well as a program of high-level seminars on issues important to AIIB and to the host country.

Minister Ameer participated in the Governor's Seminar on “Digital Connectivity” as a panelist and highlighted on the challenges faced by the Maldives as an island nation to establish a digital infrastructure and on the government’s planned initiatives.

During this visit, the loan amendment of the POISED project was signed by the Minister and the Vice President of European Investment Bank (EIB), Mr Andrew Mcdowell. Under this agreement, the EIB will provide financing amounting to Euro 45 million which would go towards achieving our renewable energy goals and ultimately ease the state fiscal burden due to reduction in fuel and energy expenditures.

During the meeting, the Maldivian delegation made a courtesy call on the President of AIIB, Mr. Jin Liqun and potential areas for assistance from AIIB were discussed such as the financing of sustainable city development, maritime transport systems and the establishment of infrastructure to further support tourism sector development. President Jin highlighted on the benefits of the newly opened Male’ – Airport – Hulhumale’ linked bridge and noted that it is vital to explore future collaborations with AIIB for the establishment of solar power systems in order to reduce the carbon footprint.

AIIB is a multilateral development bank (MDB) that aims to support the building of infrastructure in Asia and beyond. The Bank's foundation is built on the lessons of experience of existing MDBs and the private sector.
